Fleas

Here in the Greater Victoria area you and your pet are very likely to come across fleas.  They are a problem year round in our warm environment, although we see the most activity in the Spring and Fall. We recommend year long flea prevention.

How to tell if you pet if you pet is in contact with fleas?

Although scratching is the most common complaint, sometimes there will be thinning of hair along the rump of your pet, or scabs along their back and rump area.  Sometimes you will see none of these symptoms. The best way to check for fleas is to take a flea comb and comb some hair along the back or tummy of your pet, then drop the hair on a white piece of paper. You may see some black flecks come out with the hair. If so, drop a few drops of water on the hair and black flecks, if it stains the paper reddy/brown, this is flea dirt (which is actually flea feces!). If you are not sure if your pet has fleas, or if your pet has itchy skin despite regular flea control, call our office for more information.

What should I do if my pet gets fleas and how do I prevent them in the first place?

There are many treatment options available and it can be overwhelming at times. Here is a breakdown of some of the most effective treatments and preventatives.

ADVANTAGE:  This is a monthly topical treatment; it kills adult fleas on contact.

PROGRAM:  This is a monthly oral treatment; it does not kill adult fleas, but prevents them from being able to reproduce, thus ending the life cycle. It is also available in a 6 month injection for cats.

COMFORTIS: At this time, we are only able to dispense this for dogs. It is a monthly tablet that kills adult fleas when they bite the dog. This product is sold by prescription and we must follow prescribing bylaws in order to dispense it. Please call our office for more information.

REVOLUTION: Kills adults and eggs; this is also a monthly topical treatment – this product also deworms against some internal parasites. This product is sold by prescription and we must follow prescribing bylaws in order to dispense it. Please call our office for more information.

Do I need to treat my house?

Usually, the topical or oral preventatives /treatments are enough, but occasionally your house may need treatment too.

If your home requires treatment, we recommend Siphotrol premise spray. It will kill adult fleas for up to 14 days and prevents larva from hatching for 7 months. Use along baseboards, carpets, rugs, furniture and any pet resting areas.
