Veterinarians

Dr. Glynis Newman, B.Sc., MSc.(Wildlife Biology), DVM is a graduate of Ontario Veterinary College.  Dr Newman practices veterinary chiropractic and is recognized by the AVCA  (American Veterinary Chiropractic Association) www.animalchiropractic.org. For several years she worked in Ontario in small and large animal practices before coming to Victoria in 1999. She has an interest in senior pet health, chiropractic and physiotherapy treatment, and sporting dog performance. Dr. Newman is also a CRCA level 4 kayaker and kayaking instructor.
Dr. Jennifer Chan, DVM has been at the Hillside Veterinary Hospital since 1995. She graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon in 1991.  After graduating, she spent one year doing an internship in surgery and internal medicine at Washington State University Veterinary Hospital.  Dr Chan practices veterinary acupuncture and is recognized by the IVAS (International Veterinary Acupuncture Society) www.ivas.org. She has a keen interest in herbs, western medicine and surgery.
Dr. Sylvie Abrioux, DVM obtained a B.Sc. in Animal Science and went on to graduate from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. She has been part of the team at Hillside Veterinary Hospital since 2000. Prior to working here, she worked at the BCSPCA Animal Hospital in Vancouver, where she gained extensive experience in small animal surgery. She enjoys incorporating complementary therapies with traditional veterinary medicine, and she is constantly striving to improve her surgical skills. She has a busy family life, spending time with her husband and two young daughters, 2 cats and her new puppy Cedar. 
Dr. Rachel Borwein, BFA, DVM is a graduate with distinction from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. She joined the Hillside team in 2007 after completing a year at a small animal and exotics clinic in Edmonton. Her interests include yoga, travel and outdoor pursuits.
Dr. Natasha Drinnan, BSc, DVM, studied marine biology during her BSc at Simon Fraser University, and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001.  She is interested in small animal and exotic medicine and surgery.  She enjoys drawing and painting and spending time with her husband, two young sons, and her two dogs.  

Registered Animal Health Technologists (RAHT)

  Julie works with us part-time, generally on Sundays but on the occasional Saturday as well.  She has been an Animal Health Technician for many years now, working in various hospitals in and around Victoria over her career.  She has a 13-year-old son, Daniel,  4 cats, hens and sheep to keep her busy, on top of working 6-7 days a week!
Lucy graduated from Seneca College in King City, Ontario in 2006. She is excited to be in B.C., closer to her family and working here at the hospital. Lucy is interested in anaesthesia, behaviour, nutrition, and rehabilitation. She adores animals and has her own menagerie at home with two dogs and four cats.
  Theresa graduated from Fairview College in 1996 and has been an Animal Health Technologist for 12 years. Theresa's interests are anaesthesia and critical care. When she's not at work she enjoys hiking, backpacking and her saltwater aquarium.
Josie graduated from UCC in 2002. She has worked at HVH since 2003. Josie's interests include anesthesia, behaviour, and rehabilitation. She has two cats, Logan and Charlie that she loves and enjoys with her husband and daughter. 
  Yuko recently graduated from a three year Animal Health Techology course at Thompson Rivers University. She has worked at veterinary hospitals in Japan and been with us since 2005. Yuko has an 11 year old Yorkshire Terrier named "Mattcha".

Receptionists

   Jennifer has been working at the Hillside Veterinary Hospital as an Animal Health Technologist and receptionist for over 20 years.  She works with us part time. Her husband, daughter and springer spaniel “Java” keep her busy at home.
Anais has worked at Hillside since February 2008. She started as a veterinary assistant and then switched over to reception. She is currently attending Camosun College in the field of Biology with hopes to eventually practice veterinary medicine. In her spare time she enjoys camping, travelling and spending time with her two cats.  
   Reese has been working in veterinary clinics since 2006, and has been a receptionist at Hillside Vet Hospital since July 2008. When he's not taking care of his dog, cats, and rats, he enjoys playing scrabble, gardening and volunteering for animal rescue groups.
Kerri has recently joined us and brings with her 10 years of Veterinary Receptionist experience. She enjoys a happy life with her husband, daughter, 3 dogs and 2 cats. In her free time she enjoys playing sports and gardening.    
    Christie joined us at Hillside Veterinary Hospital in October of 2009. She has worked in veterinary clinics since 2005. Christie enjoys photography and collects records. She loves to spend time with her 16.5 year old dog Tosha.

Veterinary Assistants

Katie has been working in Veterinary clinics since 2006, and is new to Hillside vet hospital. She is currently completing her B.Sc. in BioPsyc at UVic. Katie is interested in animal health and behaviour, and enjoys hiking, snowboarding, swimming and hanging out with her cat Dexter in her spare time.   
    Jamie joined our team in July 2009. She decided to change careers recently, and has completed training with a Veterinary Assistant program. She enjoys life with her husband, two children and two dogs, Yoda (6 1/2) and Jack (4). She spends a lot of time doing various activities outside with her family. She loves to watch and cheer on her son playing football, and to see her daughter's creativity in the gym doing her rhythmic gymnastics routine.

Canine Rehabilitation Technicians

Rhea is one of our hydrotreadmill technologists. She has a B.Sc. in chemistry and has worked in veterinary clinics for nine years. She is often busy caring for her many pets or helping wildlife as a volunteer at the BCSPCA Wild ARC. She enjoys martial arts, kayaking, and surfing.
  Karen Brickett has a B.Sc. in Animal Science, and a M.Sc. in Poultry Nutrition & Animal Welfare. Karen has been working as a receptionist in veterinary clinics since 1997, and joined Hillside Veterinary Hospital in September 2008. In October 2008, Karen completed her canine massage therapy course, and is now a Certified Canine Massage Therapist. She shares her home with 2 dogs, 2 horses and a cat. In her spare time, she trains, teaches and competes in dog agility. She enjoys horseback riding and hiking.

Practice Manager

Jennifer joined the Hillside team in 1999.  She is also a RAHT (Registered Animal Health Technologist) and has been working in the veterinary field for 25 years. Her job is to ensure that the hospital runs smoothly and provides the highest quality services. She has a full life with her husband, daughter, cat "Reggie", dog "Tilley" and two acres of garden. 

Hospital Kitty

   Sam came to us in January of 2009. He wasted no time in taking over our office and staff room and and has all of us trained to his liking. His friendly head butts and playful attitude are a great excuse to get distracted from work!
