Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is just one of the many therapeutic services we offer. It is a painless therapy option that is quite relaxing for many pets. We use a handheld probe to emit a low level light over your pet’s afflicted area. This light will create a warm sensation on your pet’s skin, which is soothing for them. While they’re laying still, the laser works by stimulating cellular movement and reducing inflammation in their joints and, muscles. Laser therapy provides a non-invasive way to ease pain and inflammation in tissues and is readily accepted by our patients. To learn more about our laser therapy services call us at 250.598.4477.

What kind of medical conditions can laser therapy be used for?

Laser therapy is used to treat a variety of conditions including wounds, muscle pain, and osteoarthritis. Lasers are also used post-operatively on incisions to speed up the healing process and to prevent infection. We find this especially helpful following dental surgery. Our veterinarians may even recommend you combine laser therapy with acupuncture to stimulate circulation and healing.

How long does a therapy session last?

A treatment takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes and is usually performed by a rehabilitation technician or animal health technologist under the direction of a veterinarian. How often your pet will need laser therapy depends on the severity of their condition and how quickly they improve.

Is laser therapy safe?

Although lasers have been used for some time to treat people, their use is relatively recent in veterinary medicine. At Hillside Veterinary Hospital we use class 3B lasers which give off wavelengths of light but do not produce enough heat to burn, cut, or otherwise harm tissue. Laser therapy is a safe addition to our holistic treatment options for your pet!
